A forex broker referral program — also called an introducing broker (IB) program, affiliate program, or partner program — is a structured arrangement through which individuals or businesses earn commissions for bringing new clients to a forex broker. When you see a referral code, sign-up link, or "refer a friend" feature on a broker's website, you are looking at the public-facing element of these programs.

Understanding how referral programs work helps you make sense of broker marketing, evaluate rebate opportunities, and — if relevant — participate in the programs yourself.

The Three Layers of Forex Referral Programs

1. Client Referral (Refer a Friend)

The simplest form. An existing client refers a friend, family member, or colleague using a personal referral link or code. When the referred person opens an account and deposits, both parties typically receive a reward — often a cash credit, reduced spread, or account bonus.

How it works:

  • Existing client receives a unique referral link or code
  • Referred person signs up using that link
  • Both receive a reward once the referred account is verified and funded

2. Introducing Broker (IB)

A more formal structure for individuals or businesses that actively promote a broker's services. IBs typically receive ongoing commission based on the trading activity of the clients they introduce — usually a percentage of the spread or a fixed amount per lot traded.

How it works:

  • IB registers with the broker as a formal partner
  • IB promotes the broker through a website, social media, YouTube, or personal network
  • Each client who signs up via the IB's link is tracked
  • IB receives ongoing payments — usually daily or weekly — based on client trading volume

3. White Label / Affiliate

The most commercial tier. Companies license the broker's technology to operate their own branded trading environment, or large affiliate networks promote multiple brokers simultaneously through CPA (cost per acquisition) or revenue share models.

A referral code or sign-up link is a tracked URL or alphanumeric code that records which affiliate, IB, or referring client brought a new signup to the broker. When a new user registers:

  • The broker's system identifies the source of the registration
  • The referring party is credited for the introduction
  • Commission or reward calculations begin from account activation

From a new client's perspective, signing up through a referral link is identical to signing up directly — the same account conditions, the same broker, the same regulation. The referral link simply ensures the referring party receives credit.

What Referral Programs Mean for New Clients

Using a referral link or code can sometimes benefit the new client as well:

  • Rebate programs: Many IB arrangements allow the IB to share a portion of their commission with their referred clients as ongoing trading rebates — returning cash to the client on every trade
  • Welcome bonuses: Some "refer a friend" programs credit the new client with a deposit bonus or account credit
  • No downside: A referral code does not affect your account conditions, regulation, or broker relationship in any negative way

The key question to ask when presented with a referral link is: does the person sharing this link have an honest, independently verified reason to recommend this specific broker, or are they promoting it purely for commission?

IB Commission Structures: How Partners Are Paid

Commission Model Description
CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) Fixed payment per new funded client — typically $100–$500 per client
Revenue share % of the broker's revenue from the referred client over time
Per-lot rebate Fixed amount per standard lot traded by referred clients
Hybrid CPA upfront + ongoing per-lot payments

IBs earning per-lot rebates have an incentive aligned with client activity — they earn more when clients trade more. IBs on pure CPA models earn regardless of whether the client continues to trade, which creates less alignment of interest.

Evaluating Broker Reviews Written by IBs

A significant proportion of online forex broker reviews and comparison sites are operated by IBs or affiliates who receive commissions when readers click their links and open accounts. This does not mean the content is dishonest — many affiliate sites produce genuinely useful, research-based content — but it does mean you should:

  • Look for clear disclosure that the site earns commission from broker recommendations
  • Cross-reference recommendations with non-commercial sources (Forex Peace Army, Reddit, trader forums)
  • Notice if a site rates all brokers highly — genuine reviews should include honest criticism alongside recommendations

Referral programs are a normal and legitimate part of the broker marketing ecosystem. Understanding their mechanics helps you interpret the broker recommendations you encounter and make fully informed choices.
